I recall an analysis by Benny Morris that the ordeal of Israel [ultimately important to him], and Palestine lay in what he considered "half-measures" as far as the ethnic cleansing of the Nakba in 1948, and the imposition of occupation after 1967. It follows, with all the rationality of Zionists for whom the, erm, uh, "population transfer" of the Greek-Turkish War (1.6 million people) by 1923 served as a model, that the territorial conquest of their Eretz Israel required just such a genocidal outburst as we are all presently witnessing. The plans were elaborated and carefully laid, and would coincide with a generalized regional war between Israel and her neighbors. But with Egypt and Jordan now signatories of peace settlements with the Israeli state, and Lebanon unwilling to provoke war--witness the "Dahiya doctrine" during 2006--and Syria Balkanized and mired in Civil War, this presented a dilemma to the "solution" of the Likudniks and settlers and ethnonationalists/ Jewish supremacists. So, the script was flipped. Instead, the genocide was initiated in order to provoke the massive region-wide war that these warmongers--seeking "total security"--demand. I think history will bear this out. The Israeli bombing of an Iranian diplomatic post in Damascus, violating international law--again!--will provoke the war with Iran that Netanyahu has sought for over 20+ years. Morris is the same sort of nationalist historian for whom history is a source of grievances and nationalist claims as Niall Ferguson is for enthusiasts of Empire, imperial control, racism, war, aggrandizement. Of course the chickenshit Morris doesn't want to discuss his ouvre with Norman Finkelstein!

Damn… there are others in the world, contrary to what Israeli, American, and European supremacists believe. Tell that to Benny Morris!
